Descendants of Thomas Naish

Generation No. 1

1.  THOMAS1 NAISH was born Abt. 1792 in Ireland, and died April 23, 1861 in Ireland.  He married MARY KILMARTIN Unknown.  She was born 1792 in Ireland, and died November 18, 1880 in Greenfield, Franklin, Co., MA.

Notes for THOMAS NASH:

De Nais

de Nasshe, Nash, Naish, Ash, Ashe. This surname came to Ireland in the 13th century during the Norman-English invasion. The family settled in County  Kerry and evolved into an Irish group that in later centuries was of consequence in the affairs of County Kerry and County Limerick. The motto is "Truth conquers everthing."

Thomas Nash and Mary Martin Nash were born in Ireland around 1792. We do not know where they were born or married.

Thomas died in Ireland. Mary Martin Nash died in Greenfield, Ma. The Nash's spread to America, Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania.

We need to look at the history of Ireland to see why they immigrated.

In the early years of the nineteenth century, England depended on Ireland for all their agricultural products. In 1815, England restored trade with the rest of Europe and became less dependent on Ireland. The Irish economy went into a depression.

By the late 1820's, the Irish population boomed and these families wanted land of their own. The pressure of the population meant there was less land to go around. More and more marginal land was bought under cultivation and produced a smaller and less reliable crop. The only crop that would grow with any success in the poor ground was the potato. The Irish became dependent on the potato as their staple - if not their only - source of food.

Inevitably, the potato crop failed and hardship followed. Between 1800 and 1845 a failure of the crop happened every two years with general nation wide failure every five years. Worsening conditions encouraged those who could sell, to emigrate.

The Great Famine got its name, because unlike earlier famines and shortages, it lasted several years and at its peak, engulfed the whole of Ireland. Its primary cause was failure of the potato crop. A fungus, attacked and destroyed the crop in 1845, not an area of Ireland escaped. In 1847, the crops seemed healthy, but few seed potatoes had survived, and produced a general shortage.

When the blight returned in 1848, it was a sickening blow.

The Irish started to leave Ireland, anything was better than starvation and watching your loved ones die of hunger. The cost of a ticket was one pound, ten schillings, and they also had to show they owned a sufficient supply of clothing for the voyage before they were even allowed to board.

The journey across the Atlantic was fraught with danger. Ten weeks tossing about the ocean, living on dried oatmeal or dried biscuits and stale water. (fresh provisions did not last more than three days.) Unsanitary conditions made the ocean voyage a high risk undertaking. Cholera, typhoid and ship's fever claimed many. Those already weakened by famine survived by luck. The ships were referred to as  "coffin ships", stuffed to bursting with the poor, ill-nourished and vermin riddened peasants. The death rate was one in five.

Between 1801 and 1900 approximately eight million people left Ireland, the majority of them going to the United States and Canada. This was the equivalent to the entire population of Ireland in 1841. For some, the New World was a poor substitute for the one they left behind. It is impossible to end the story of Irish immigration on a depressing note. For everyone that failed, thousands more went on to forge a new and better life.

One has to wonder what kind of life Thomas Nash and Mary Martin lived. They lived thru the Potato famine and long enough to see their children immigrate to America and beyond.

Notes for JAMES NASH:

James Nash immigrated to Australia December 15, 1857. When did he come to New Zealand? On his death Certificate it states he was in New Zealand for 30 years.

He is listed as a widower on death cert. Cause of death digestive diarrhea and heart failure. States born in County Limerick, parents unknown. He dies without a will.

There is no obituary listed in any newspaper for James Nash.

He is buried in Buffalo Cemetery, Coromandel, New Zealand. No marker marks his grave. All the wood crosses were burned in a fire in the 1900's.

He is listed in the 1880 WISE DIRECTORY TOKATEA( the range above Coromandel).

From 1880-1895 he is listed as a miner, in Driving creek. There is no mention of him in this area from 1875-1879.

In the 1883 directory Driving creek is described as;

Driving Creek,  50 miles N.E. by steamer from Aukland City; in Coromandel country, on the coast. Population 2,200, chiefly mining gold.

The New Zealand electoral roll for Thames/ Coromandel lists the following;

1879-1880 not listed

1880-1881 not listed

1882-1890 James Nash, miner, Tiki, Coromandel

1893 James Nash, miner, Tiki, residential

From this information it appears James Nash moved to Coromandel in 1880. Where he lived before then is still a mystery. Who he married is also an unknown and who were his children?
